In recent years, the forests of the world have come in focus, both as a threat and as a saviour to the climate. The threat is coming from the high rates of deforestation and forest degradation contributing to 20% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The saviour portion is that new forest plantations, sustainable forest management, decreased deforestation and the substitution effect of using forest products instead of fossil based products can substantially mitigate high CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Some of the international acronyms rising out of this are REDD+ and CDM, where development of forests has been given special attention and new economic possibilities.

Climate change also represents a major threat to many forest ecosystems around the world. Changed climatic conditions threatens to eat away at stable forests and change them into new ecological zones, as the climate zones move faster than the forest species are able to adapt. This will have economic and environmental impacts that both forest owners and national authorities will have to plan for and adapt to.
